Jayhawk Area Council Scouting Community,

Spring is here! This nice warm weather has us all thinking about outdoor activities and enjoying quality time with our friends and families. Outdoor Program is a key experience in the year of a Scout and is an incredible opportunity for Scout families to participate in together.

Jayhawk Area Council knows many of you are wondering about the resumption of Scouting activities and our plans for Summer Camps mid COVID-19 pandemic. Families have expressed to us both their excitement and their fear concerning the return of face to face contact, group activities, meetings, and summer camps. The decisions will be based on our #1 top priority which is the safety of our Scouts, Parents, Leaders, Staff, and all those associated with the Scouting program.

Summer Camp is obviously our biggest decision we are facing right now. We are hopeful that our camps will be able to open. However, the safety of all involved will be the top concern when finalizing our plans. We have been closely monitoring the COVID-19 in our area. The CDC is currently drafting guidelines for Day Camps and Resident Camps. They suggest we don’t make any decisions until we have the opportunity to review their guidance. When making our decisions to operate camp, it will be based solely on our ability to follow CDC guidelines, local, state, and BSA recommendations.

We have an outstanding group of staff and committee members who are committed in taking the time to evaluate all these recommendation, best practices, and other options when those decisions are made. This is a tough situation and we thank them for their dedication in establishing a safe Scouting experience during this matter.

We understand the uncertainties we are facing. Regardless of our decisions, we would like to make it easy for families and units to reserve their reservation knowing that you will be 100% refunded if the changes to operating camps are effected. Our goal is to run a healthy, safe camp while providing a fun experience where skills are enhances, friendships are made, and memories are created.

In the meantime Jayhawk Area Council would like you to stay safe, follow the guidelines, and continue to keep Scouting with our online activities. (Merit Badge) (Scouting at Home)

The Program Task Force will continue to monitor the current situations and make adjustments as needed. This announcement will include any changes in programming and any additional preparation for our attending units.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to work together to keep providing a Scouting opportunity.

Will camp happen?

This question we value greatly and have been taking very seriously. We look forward to providing a full range of Scouting programs as much as we can and as the situation allows. At this time, we are continuing with 2020 Summer Camp Session. We will notify via e-mail to Units, post on our website, and social media our decision of camp(s)  See article for details.

This is a topic that many staff and volunteer members speak about on a weekly bases. We are striving to provide the most safest and best quality of programs we can offer.

If I register for camp and you have to cancel will I get a refund?

Yes! When the time comes to make a decision to cancel any or all camps you will be issued a full refund. Please contact the Registrar at or our office number 785.354.8541.

If camp and activities are allowed this summer, what protocols is the council working on to make sure Scouts, Leaders, Staff, and Volunteers are safe? As well as having a great Scouting experience.

Jayhawk Area Council, Program Task Force, Program Cabinet, and our Health Officer have been working very closely to prepare for the safest camp experience. Camp is not about the building or location but about the people and the experiences. A complete list of expectations will be provided in advance for your preparation.

A few things we have considered are:

  • Pre-Camp screening (temp & questions on how the Scout is feeling)
  • Make sure our Staff are well and taking care of themselves
  • Extra hand washing stations
  • Hand sanitizers in every location
  • Cleaning procedures during camp
  • Staff will be trained on how to properly clean equipment in between Scouts.
  • Social distancing will be a challenge but we are working on making adaptations for each program (smaller group sizes)
  • Food Safety is a topic we are working to continue the safest way to implement.
  • Quarantine procedures if a situation occurs.

How can I help?
