Short-Term Camp Administrator Training

Picture yourself at Camp Jayhawk sitting in Mabee Dining Hall enjoying some delicious food. You look up and notice the line of pennants around, like the one pictured above. If you are not familiar with them, these flags represent our camp accreditation. Every year National Camp Accreditation Program Administrators come out to Camp Jayhawk and Camp Delaware to evaluate our property, look at documentation to ensure we have adequate train staff, and it is safe to operate.

A New National Policy will take effect January 1, 2021: A short-term camp is any council or district-organized overnight camping program, whether one-time or continuing, that is one, two or three nights in length where the council or its agents (volunteers) provide the staffing and may provide program and food services, and includes camps conducted off council properties. This includes Camporees, Klondike derbies, family camping, Webelos Woods, overnight training courses like Wood Badge, NYLT, IOLS, and BALOO and OA events. Each short-term camp must be administered by a short-term camp administrator, who must participate in an 8 hour training.

These changes are designed to help councils now elevate short term camps to new levels of excellence in delivering Scouting’s promise to youth by applying the same standards and process that have been used for years for long term/resident camps

FAQ

Why the change?

The goal of NCAP has always been to ensure safe and quality outdoor programs. Scouting can be an intense experience that offers a wide range of adventures. Some of those adventures are challenging. Short-Term Camp Administrator helps insure we are offering a safe and good quality program. If something occurs, we can go back to the paperwork and see what changes can be made to make it better or fix the situation.

I just want to volunteer and now I have paperwork to do?

We enjoy working with all our volunteers and we appreciate the time they put into each and every event. The paperwork side is for the short-term administrator. When planning an event it takes preparation and a well thought out process. Many of the standards are already put in place, the paperwork validates those standards.

NCAP has so many standards which ones apply to ONLY Short-Term Camps?

Click here for "Standards at a Glance"  Please understand that each event is different. Not all events will need to meet each standard.

Who will provide additional information on how to get trained and connect you with the other trained short-term camp administrators?
