Tuesday, March 3rd  – Scout Shop Reopens as Locally Managed Scout Shop

Recently, the Boy Scouts of America National Supply Division approached the Jayhawk Area Council about changing management of the Scout Shop. This is part of our overall evaluation of stores they manage in an effort to streamline their operations and better serve Scouting communities.  Therefore, the Jayhawk Area Council Board of Directors decided to transition the store back to local Council management effective March 1, 2020.  We will still have the support of a territory manager to assist us with ordering, staff training, store layout and sharing of best practices in retails sales.  Below is an excerpt of the notice from the National Supply Division.

Beginning March 1, 2020, the Jayhawk Scout Shop will begin operations as a council run store.  Due to the ever-changing model of retail, this decision was made in the best interest of customers, volunteers, and families.  As a council run store, you will still be provided with the highest levels of customer service, have access to the products that will make your next Scouting Adventure awesome and maybe even find something new, as well as be able to use the shop as a one stop shop for not only Scouting merchandise but to also take care of unit business at the same time.

We appreciate your support throughout the years and look forward to serving you in bigger and better ways.

The Jayhawk Scout Shop final day as a National Store will be Saturday, February 22.  The store will be closed the last week of February for inventory and will reopen on Monday, March 2 at 9:00 AM as a local council store. Our intent is to make this transition with as little interruption of service or expectations as possible.

Some of the benefits of a local council store include:

  • Dzie Hauk Tonga Lodge and Falley Scout Reservation merchandise will now be available in the store.
  • Units can access unit accounts and make deposits on Saturdays.
  • Event registration, popcorn payment and membership registration can be made on Saturdays.
  • One checkout counter for all transactions.
  • Greater flexibility to run specials and sales and unique seasonal events.
  • Access to both council-operated or national-operated store inventory to get the items we do not have in stock shipped within a few days.

As a part of this transition, effective March 1, 2020, the hours of operation for the store and service center will be identical.  The store will remain open all day and not close for a lunch break. New hours for the Jayhawk Area Council offices and store will be:

  • Monday – Friday:  9:00 AM – 5:30 PM
  • Saturday: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Saturday hours remain unchanged but there may be times we will close the Scout Shop at the Rolley Scout Service Center in order to relocate a “satellite store” to a major Saturday event such as Washburn Merit Badge University, Cub Adventure Day, and others. Those will be announced well in advance at the Rolley Scout Service Center, our website, and our various Facebook pages.  We will have the capability to set up a “mobile store” for recruitment nights, lock-ins, day camps and other activities bringing the store to out to our families. You will be able to call in orders and have them shipped directly to you.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  If you, your unit or any of your Scouts have Scout Shop Gift Cards, you will want to redeem them BEFORE close of business on February 22.  At this point in time, a local council store is unable to redeem them.  Gift Cards can always be redeemed online at www.Scoutshop.org.

These are exciting times for the Jayhawk Area Council and we look forward to this new chapter of service to our units and Scouting families.
