High Adventure Programs

The BSA operates four National High Adventure Bases.  Reservations are usually taken one and a half years in advance.

Philmont Scout Ranch

The Jayhawk Area Council regularly sponsors contingents to Philmont Scout Ranch.  Philmont is a high adventure base located in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of northern New Mexico. It consists of 137,000 acres of mountainous terrain laced with hundreds of miles of trails. This is a backpacking adventure of a lifetime and an opportunity for fellowship with scouts from all over the world.

Backpacking treks at Philmont are physically, mentally and emotionally demanding. Adequate preparation is essential. Participants will be required to attend three mandatory training campouts and one pre-departure shakedown.

From June to September, Northern Tier offers Scouts and Venturers the world's best wilderness canoeing. Beginning in December, Scouts may participate in the challenging cold-weather camping program called Okpik (OOk' pick).
